Sleep apnea is a condition in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. While commonly associated with humans, dogs can also develop sleep apnea.

What Causes Sleep Apnea in Dogs?

It is not a common problem for most dogs. It primarily affects brachycephalic or short-nosed dogs. The condition is called brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS).

    The most common causes include:

    • obesity
    • airway obstruction
    • short-nosed anatomy
    • throat abnormalities

    Flat-faced breeds are especially vulnerable.

Symptoms of Sleep Apnea in Dogs

    Owners may notice:

    • loud snoring
    • gasping during sleep
    • breathing pauses
    • excessive daytime sleepiness
    • restless sleeping patterns

    Breeds Most at Risk

    Commonly affected breeds:

    • English Bulldog
    • French Bulldog
    • Pug
    • Boxer

    Diagnosis

    Veterinarians may use:

    • physical examination
    • airway evaluation
    • sleep observation
    • imaging tests

    Treatment Options

    Treatment depends on the cause.

    Possible treatments include:

    • weight loss
    • surgery in severe cases
    • allergy management
    • sleeping position adjustments

    Final Thoughts

Sleep apnea in dogs can reduce quality of life and should not be ignored. Early diagnosis greatly improves long-term health outcomes.
