WHY DO DOGS SNORE – There are several reasons why a dog may have a tendency to snore, what is important is to pay attention to whether your pet has always snored or if he started recently?
Whether you are worried about your pet’s health or have problems with insomnia from his snoring, below we have singled out a few of the most common reasons why dogs snore.
There are breeds of dogs that are naturally prone to snoring – these are dogs that have shorter noses, as well as an elongated soft palate that can cause limited breathing during napping, which will result in snoring. Some of these breeds are English Mastiff, English Bulldog, Shih Tzu, Chow Chow, Boxer, French Bulldog and Pug.
Sleeping position – If you notice your dog snoring loudly while sleeping on his back, you can try to move him to his side which should stop the snoring. As with humans, sleeping position can often be responsible for snoring problems. A small number of dogs sleep on their backs often, but those who find themselves in this sleeping position will most likely snore because lying on their backs can interfere with airflow.
Weight – If your pet has excess fat in the body, it can suppress your dog’s airways and cause him to snore during sleep. In addition to snoring, obesity has an overall bad effect on his health and many aspects of his life. An overweight dog may have trouble sleeping because his airways are narrowed.
Nasal congestion – Another possible cause of snoring is swelling of the nasal cavity. Just as it is difficult for people to breathe due to a stuffy nose and a cold, our pets can find themselves in a similar situation when it is very difficult to find a position in which the flow of air is enabled.
Allergies – If you have noticed that your dog only snores at certain times of the year, seasonal allergies can be a possible cause of snoring. Our pets can also be sensitive to substances from their environment, which can lead to sneezing, nasal congestion and other uncomfortable allergy symptoms.
