Some cat owners claim that their pets like ice cream or similar sweets, but what do scientists say – can cats taste sweet at all? Experts have long claimed that cats can distinguish three types of tastes. These are sour, salty and bitter.
But what about the sweet? Can’t cats enjoy sweets? It is true that they can taste sweet, but to a very small extent. This conclusion was reached by examining genes. Namely, two genes are responsible for the taste of sweet. Cats do not have one gene at all, and the other is not sufficiently developed.
Another question that arises is whether cats are allowed to eat sweets at all? While many cats love ice cream, cookies, or some cream, it’s actually about being attracted to the texture of the food, not the taste. Cats prefer to remove food, so they will use a treat for that reason.
However, some sweets can have a very adverse effect on your cat’s health, so you need to be careful. Chocolate is forbidden, especially dark chocolate, because it causes muscle tremors, fatigue and heart problems in cats.
